What is Reiki?
It is Universal Life Force Energy which is channeled through the Practitioner to the Client for the highest and greatest good of the Client. It is actually the Client who draws the amount of energy needed and where it is needed in their body. The Definition of Reiki REIKI – pronounced, “Ray-Key”, is a Japanese word. REI – Japanese word for universal, spirit (unseen), guided, and gift KI – Japanese word for the life force energy which flows through every living thing. Reiki isn’t actually a word at all, but a combination of the two words, “Rei” and “Ki”, to describe many types of healing and spiritual work. It is a Japanese term used by Usui-Sensei, (the founder of Reiki), to describe ‘cosmic energy.’ Dr. Usui’s method of healing is actually called, “Usui System of Natural Healing”, or “Usui Reiki Ryoho.” So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." Healing is a Natural Instinct If we are not feeling well, or we hurt ourselves, our natural instinct is to put our hand on the area that is not feeling well or is in pain to comfort ourselves or someone else. People who are not trained in Reiki tap into their own energy resources. A Reiki Practitioner will tap into universal energy, so as not to deplete our own supply and end up feeling drained. We become a natural conduit for chi and apply it through a simple touch. |
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
Reiki is transmitted through a very light touch. It feels healing, warm, loving and deeply relaxing. I find Reiki is relaxing, and I will go into a deep meditation of my own without any effort. It is more relaxing and centering than a massage. During Reiki, the person receiving Reiki often becomes deeply relaxed. They may experience a tingling sensation, a release of tension (muscles often release and melt), a reduction in pain, and/or a relaxation of emotional armor (bringing unresolved issues to the surface, release of emotion, tears, etc.) People sometimes see colors, get messages, fall asleep, and on rare occasions, feel nothing. The experience of Reiki will change from session to session, as well. Reiki’s benefits have been so welcomed by western consumers that: 1) The United States Army uses Reiki as a part of a $4 million program to mend the psyches of returning veterans through the use of bio-energies [http://blog.wired.com:80/defense/2008/03/army-bioenergy.html]; 2) Major medical centers, such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY) incorporate Reiki into their cancer treatment plans to ease the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, improve immune function, ease anxiety and enhance positive emotional attitude, decrease pain and promote relaxation (http://www.reikimedresearch.org/#104); and 3) The National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine prominently displays a Reiki session on its home page (http://nccam.nih.gov.) Numerous studies validate its effectiveness, as well as offer a scientific basis for energy medicine [http://www.reiki.org/Download/OschmanReprint2.pdf] Countless studies, many currently conducted through the National Institutes on Health, are focusing on the scientific basis for energy medicine based on the laws of physics and biology.
